The technology behind XGVRL — and how it works for vineyards

Part 1 – The foundation: XML and the XGVRL format

At its core, XGVRL is not just a list of indicators — it’s a digital language, designed to structure sustainability data in a way that is readable by machines and humans alike.

The backbone of this language is XML (eXtensible Markup Language).
XML is an open, widely used standard that allows information to be stored, transferred, and validated across platforms, systems, and borders. It’s the same technology used in digital tax reporting, regulatory filings, and many open data ecosystems.

In XGVRL, each vineyard’s report will be formatted as an XML file that includes:

  • a clear structure of chapters and indicators (metadata, environmental data, social data, etc.)

  • standardized units of measurement

  • definitions and validation rules

  • versioning and compatibility fields

This structure ensures that data from different vineyards can be:

  • compared across time and space

  • validated automatically

  • ingested by third-party tools (certifiers, public databases, etc.)

  • exported or visualized through software integrations

By using XML, XGVRL makes sustainability interoperable, transparent, and future-proof.

Part 2 – The interface: a tool built for vineyards

Of course, not every vineyard is equipped to write XML files — nor should they be.

That’s why we’re building a user-friendly, web-based data collection interface, designed specifically for vineyard operators.

This interface will:

  • guide users through each chapter of XGVRL in simple, accessible language

  • allow data to be entered manually or imported (where possible)

  • include contextual help, pre-filled suggestions, and definitions

  • validate data in real time and prevent formatting errors

  • generate a downloadable XGVRL-compliant XML report automatically

The platform will also provide:

  • version tracking (e.g., “XGVRL 1.0”, “1.1”)

  • a dashboard view of key indicators over time

  • support for multiple languages and units of measure

  • integration modules for certifiers or institutions (where needed)
